VPN: A VPN is created by establishing the point to point connection virtually. This virtual connection is established through a gateway by use of dedicated servers, traffic encryption, and virtual tunnelling protocols. The original IP address of the user is replaced by a random IP address of a VPN server once the user selects the server for the connection. The user can then browse the internet without revealing his identity.

Verdict: TOR is much safer than VPN as it is hard to crack through different nodes and steal the user information. IN case of VPN, a hacker can get hold of a server and see what user is transferring. Still, it is hard to steal the information from a VPN server.

Encryption & Speed

TOR: As talked earlier, encryption in TOR is routed through different nodes and relays before it is actually decrypted and sent to the destination. This means that Node 2 only knows the IP address of adjacent nodes. Node 4 doesn’t know the IP address of Node 2. SO, the last node can never know the IP address of the first node. This makes it impossible to crack the data passing through a TOR network. The only downfall is its slow speed.

VPN: Though VPN makes use of strong encryption, it is still easier to get hold of the information transferred over a VPN network as compared to TOR. Most of the VPN providers make use of military-grade AES 256-bit encryption and OpenVPN protocol to encrypt user data when the user chooses to connect to a VPN server. A VPN is much faster than TOR as multiple nodes are not involved.

Verdict: If you have all the time in the world, you can definitely go for TOR. But if you want quick access to the internet and good speed transfer, VPN should be your first choice.

Geo Restrictions

TOR: You can only access the desired websites with TOR if the exit node is in the preferred country where the site you are browsing is not blocked. Tor is unable to bypass Geo-restrictions in smaller countries.

VPN: All you have to do is connect to a server of a country where the site you are accessing is not blocked. In this way, you can access almost every website you are looking to access.


Verdict: You can always use a VPN if you are looking to bypass the geo-restriction. In case of Tor, you might not be able to bypass the geo-restrictions easily because of its node structure.
